The MPC Step Sequencer: a complete guide
Step Sequencer turns the pads into step buttons: instead of recording a pattern live, you build it one step at a time, bar by bar, pad by pad. It's a real, documented mode on every current standalone MPC, with its own Quick Start walkthrough and its own full reference section, one hard rule most people skip past, a configuration window almost nobody opens, and a Nudge feature with wrap behavior specific enough that Akai spells out three separate cases. This is the whole mode, checked page by page, plus two places Akai's own manual disagrees with itself.
The short version
Step Sequencer lets you build a sequence by using the pads as step buttons, simulating a traditional step-sequencer-style drum machine, and it only works on MIDI tracks, not audio tracks. Getting in is Menu then Step Sequencer on every model, or a hardware shortcut that varies by unit, Step Seq on MPC X, Live II, and One, or a Shift combo on the Key and One G2 lineup, and the newer manual version documents that shortcut list while the older one doesn't have it at all. A gear icon opens a small config window with four fields, default step Velocity, Step Size in steps per bar, Auto-Scroll behavior, and whether Automation is locked to the current step or floats free of the grid. Entering and deleting a note is one tap each, and for time divisions bigger than 16 steps a bar, the extra steps live on additional pad banks you page through. Nudge shifts the whole pattern left or right by one step with wrap behavior that changes depending on whether you're in a plain sequence, a track with Independent Track Length enabled, or an MPC Pro Pack clip, and Flip Steps inverts the entire pattern in one tap, empty steps become full-velocity hits, hit steps go empty. That's the mode. The rest of this guide is every field, the exact wrap rules, what changed between manual versions, and two places Akai's own documentation contradicts itself.
WORKING PRODUCER'S NOTE: the reason to actually learn this mode instead of just holding Note Repeat is control. Note Repeat gives you a mechanical roll you can't edit after the fact without re-recording it. Step Sequencer gives you a pattern you can see, one step you can nudge without touching the others, one velocity you can drag without retriggering the whole bar. If you want ghost notes in a hi-hat pattern, or you want to flip a rhythm in one tap to hear the negative space of what you just programmed, this is the mode, not the pads live.
What the Step Sequencer actually is
Akai's own description is specific about what this mode stands in for: it simulates the experience of a traditional step-sequencer-style drum machine, the kind where you punch steps into a fixed grid rather than play them in real time. That's a genuinely different workflow from recording a track live off the pads, built for patterns that are easier to build by eye than by hand, four-on-the-floor kicks, sixteenth-note hi-hat rolls with the odd step pulled out, anything with a rhythm you already know the shape of before you play a single note.
The hard boundary is worth repeating on its own: available for MIDI tracks only, not audio tracks. The Quick Start walkthrough's own example track is a drum track, not one literally labeled MIDI, which is the practical read on that line: "MIDI tracks" here means any track whose data is note events, drum, keygroup, MIDI, plugin, CV, versus a track holding recorded audio with no note events to step-enter in the first place. If you're trying to punch a rhythm into a recorded loop, Step Sequencer is the wrong tool, that job belongs to Chop Mode or manual audio editing instead.
One more line from the same opening passage: you can also create and edit automation using the Step Sequencer, not just note events. The Automation field inside the configuration window below is specifically about how that automation behaves relative to the step grid.
Entering Step Sequencer mode
Every current model can reach Step Sequencer the same universal way, press Menu, then tap Step Sequencer, the only method the older manual version documents at all. The newer manual version keeps that universal path and adds a hardware shortcut list on top: press Step Seq directly on MPC X, MPC Live II, or MPC One, hold Shift and press Grid/Step Seq on MPC Key 61 or MPC Key 37 G2, or hold Shift and press Grid Edit/Step Seq on MPC One G2. That's a real, disclosed addition between manual versions, not a page-numbering artifact, and it lines up with the same pattern this site's MIDI CC automation article already found independently in the Pedal Settings section of these same two manuals: MPC Key 37 G2 postdates the older manual version, so the older file has nothing to attach a Key 37 G2-specific shortcut to.

The last two rows don't match each other, and both are the same manual version, a separate inconsistency covered in full below. Practically: if a hardware shortcut looks unlisted for your exact MPC Key model in the section you're reading, check the other section before assuming your unit can't do it, one of the two lists in the current manual says it can.
The five-minute walkthrough
Akai's own Quick Start chapter builds a step pattern from a blank sequence in seven moves, a genuinely useful order to learn the mode in, since it starts at "no sequence exists yet" rather than assuming one is already loaded.
- Create or select a sequence. In Main Mode, tap Sequence 1 to select it, then use the data dial or the + button to switch to an unused sequence slot, shown as "(unused)" until you edit it.
- Select a drum track from that sequence, then enter Step Sequencer mode via Menu > Step Sequencer or the hardware shortcut for your model.
- Set the bar length. Tap the Bars field at the top of the screen and use the data dial or the +/- buttons to pick a length. The Track Length selector next to it lets a track run a different length than the sequence around it, a 1-bar drum idea looping under a 4-bar bass line, for instance.
- Pick which bar to edit with the Bar -/+ buttons at the bottom of the screen. The current bar number shows in the upper-left corner.
- Pick which pad to edit with the Pad -/+ buttons, same upper-left readout for the current pad number.
- Press Play. The current step is marked in green as the sequence runs.
- Enter and delete notes. Press an unlit pad or tap an unlit step marker to add a note, it lights up in a color matching its velocity, and the on-screen step marker lights blue with a velocity bar. Press a lit pad to delete that note. Hold Shift and tap Clear Page to wipe every note in the current page view.
That's a complete pattern from a blank sequence with nothing but the pads and the data dial. Everything past this point is depth: the configuration window, velocity editing beyond the default, pad banks for busy time divisions, and Nudge/Flip for reshaping a pattern you've already built.
The Step Sequencer configuration window
Tapping the gear icon on the Step Sequencer screen opens a window with four fields that shape how the whole mode behaves, worth setting up before you start punching in steps.

Step Size is the field that trips people up most, because it isn't scoped to the Step Sequencer screen the way it looks. Changing it also moves the project's live Timing Correct value, the same TC window that governs quantize and swing everywhere else on the machine, reachable directly by tapping TC at the bottom of the screen. If a pattern you recorded live suddenly plays on a different grid after a Step Sequencer session, Step Size is the field to check first, it's a shared setting, not a local one.
Three more controls live at the bottom of the main screen: hold Shift and use the Track -/+ buttons to switch which track you're sequencing, hold Shift and tap Clear to wipe every step in the current sequence, and hold Shift and tap Clear Page to wipe only the current page view. Clear and Clear Page are easy to mix up under pressure. Clear wipes the whole sequence. Clear Page wipes only what's on screen.
Entering, deleting, and paging through steps
The core loop runs pad selection first, then bar selection, then step entry. Use the Pad -/+ buttons to pick which pad's steps you're editing, the current pad number shows upper-left, and you can also hold Shift and tap a pad directly to jump to it. There's a third way too, Pad Select, with two modes of its own: tap and hold Pad Sel, press the pad, then release Pad Sel, or latch it, tap Pad Sel once so it stays active, press the pad, then tap Pad Sel again to release it. The latch version is worth defaulting to if you're switching pads constantly.
Once a pad is selected, use the Bar -/+ buttons to pick which bar's steps you're looking at, same upper-left readout convention. From there, press the pads on your MPC hardware, or tap a button at the bottom of the sequencer screen, and each pad corresponds directly to a step in that bar, lighting with a color matching its velocity when a note already exists there.
The one real limit worth knowing before you push Step Size high: with 16 physical pads and a time division bigger than 16 steps per bar, a single bar's steps can't fit on one pad bank. Akai's manual states this rule twice in a row, once inside the step-entry procedure and once again as its own paragraph right after, worth treating as emphasis rather than a typo. The extra steps split across multiple pad banks, paged through with the arrows next to the step numbers (ranges like 1-16, 17-32) or the hardware Pad Bank buttons. At 16 steps a bar this never comes up. Push Step Size to 32 or higher and it will.
Editing step velocity
A step's velocity isn't locked to whatever the default Velocity field was set to when you entered it. Three ways to adjust it after the fact, all on the same screen. Tap anywhere on a step's velocity bar and the top of that bar jumps to the point you tapped. Use the slider on the right edge of the screen to raise or lower every step's velocity at once, useful for scaling a whole pattern's intensity without touching each step individually. Or turn the Q-Link knob that lines up with a given step, though the Q-Links have to be in Screen edit mode first. Any of the three can also delete a step outright: drag a step's velocity to 0 (Off) and the note is gone, same result as pressing a lit pad to delete it directly. That's the move for ghost notes and dynamic patterns: punch the basic rhythm in at the default velocity first, then go back and pull individual hits down instead of leaving everything at one flat volume.
Nudging and flipping the pattern
Two tools reshape a pattern you've already built without re-entering every step. Nudge < and Nudge > shift the entire pattern left or right by one step, a fast way to try different rhythmic feels against the same grid without touching individual note placements. What happens at the edges is specific and depends on which of three situations you're in, and Akai documents all three rather than leaving it as one general rule.

Nudge moves one step at a time in one direction, not a bulk time-shift tool, so a pattern that needs to move eight steps takes eight taps. Flip Steps is the other reshaping tool, and it does something nothing else here does: it inverts the whole pattern in one tap. Steps that had no notes get notes at full velocity, 127. Steps that had notes become empty. Two practical uses: hearing the negative space of a pattern (flip a hi-hat groove and you'll instantly hear whether the gaps you left are musical or just where you ran out of ideas), and fast A/B pattern generation, build one groove, flip it, and you have a second one guaranteed to be rhythmically complementary rather than random. Worth remembering Flip Steps resets every flipped step's velocity to full, 127, not back to whatever it was, a one-way move for velocity data even if you flip back to restore note positions.
How this feature has changed since v3.7
The v3.7 changelog documents two real changes to Step Sequencer, both under "Step Sequencer Improvements," meaning the wrap rules and swing behavior described as plain current-state facts above didn't always work that way.
The Nudge wrap rules in the table above were introduced in this update. Before it, nudging could push events outside the valid playable range of their parent sequence or clip entirely. The changelog describes the fix in close to the same language the current manual now uses as ordinary behavior: nudged events stay locked inside the valid playable range, wrapping back to the start when they pass the end boundary and to the end when nudged before the start, with an explicit promise that events will never appear outside the valid timeline after nudging. If an old tutorial video shows Nudge behaving differently, that's not a misremembering, the feature genuinely worked differently before this update.
The second change is smaller but affects every note punched in by hand: as of the same update, notes inserted into the Step Sequencer take the current Timing Correct Swing setting into account. Before this update, a step-entered note landed exactly on its grid position regardless of TC's swing percentage. Combined with Step Size's own effect on the live TC value, this is a second, quieter way a hand-punched pattern can end up sounding shuffled, worth checking TC's Swing field if a pattern sounds subtly off-grid and you never touched a knob.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: trying to Step Sequencer an audio track. The mode is scoped to MIDI tracks, note-event tracks like drum, keygroup, MIDI, plugin, and CV, not tracks holding recorded audio. Move the material to a note-based track or use Chop Mode instead.
Mistake: hit Clear expecting to wipe only the visible page and lost the whole sequence's steps instead. Clear wipes every step in the current sequence. Clear Page wipes only the current page view. Reach for Clear Page unless you genuinely mean the whole sequence.
Mistake: can't find steps 17 through 32 after raising Step Size past 16. Time divisions larger than 16 steps a bar split across multiple pad banks. Use the arrows next to the step numbers or the hardware Pad Bank buttons, the missing steps aren't gone, they're on a different bank.
Mistake: Nudge seems to move notes somewhere unexpected instead of just shifting them by one step. That's the wrap rule doing its job, not a bug. Check which of the three cases applies, plain sequence, Independent Track Length, or an MPC Pro Pack clip, each wraps at a different boundary.
A note on sources and manual versions
Every technical claim above is checked directly against Akai's Standalone OS User Guide, primarily Manual Version 3.9: the Operation Modes Step Sequencer reference on pages 179 through 181, and the Quick Start walkthrough on pages 28 and 29. Cross-checked against Manual Version 3.7, where the equivalent Operation Modes content sits on pages 173 and 174, the definition, configuration fields, navigation, step entry, velocity editing, Nudge, and Flip Steps are all word-for-word identical between versions apart from the one addition below. We also pulled the v3.7 changelog directly, page 8 in that file's front matter.
Two genuine, disclosed differences came out of that cross-check. First: v3.9 adds a hardware-shortcut entry method to the Operation Modes section that v3.7 does not have at all, the older version's instructions stop at "press Menu, and then tap Step Sequencer." That tracks with the hardware timeline the same way the MIDI CC automation article on this site already established for the Pedal Settings section of these same two manuals: MPC Key 37 G2 postdates the older manual version, so it has nothing to add a Key 37 G2 shortcut to.
Second, and this one is not version-to-version: v3.9 disagrees with itself. Its Quick Start chapter, page 29, lists three MPC Key models for the Shift+Grid/Step Seq shortcut, Key 61, Key 37, and Key 37 G2. Its own Operation Modes chapter, page 179, lists only two for the identical shortcut, dropping plain Key 37. We're leading with the Quick Start list as the more complete one, on the reasoning that a plain Key 37 almost certainly shares the shortcut with its G2 successor given the same keybed and button layout, and that a two-item list dropping one entry reads more like an editing slip than a deliberate restriction. That's a read, not a confirmed fact, if your Key 37 doesn't behave as described, that's Akai's own manual disagreeing with itself, not this write-up.
Finally, the v3.7 changelog entry on page 8 is real "how this evolved" material, not a redundant restatement, since the Nudge wrap-rule language on page 181 reads as timeless fact but was introduced as a fix in that same update, alongside making Step Sequencer note entry respect the current TC Swing setting. Both covered above in "How this feature has changed."
Verdict: where to start
VERDICT
Never opened Step Sequencer before: follow the seven-step Quick Start walkthrough above start to finish on a blank sequence and a drum track. It's the fastest path to a working pattern and exactly how Akai teaches the mode itself. Building a pattern with real dynamics instead of one flat velocity: punch in the basic rhythm at the default Velocity, then go back with the per-step tap, the right-edge slider, or a Q-Link in Screen edit mode and pull individual hits down for ghost notes. Working with a dense time division: set Step Size above 16 and immediately learn the pad-bank arrows next to the step numbers, or you'll lose track of where half your steps went. Stuck creatively on a groove: Flip Steps for an instant, rhythmically complementary variation, or Nudge one step at a time to feel how the pattern sits against different parts of the beat. On MPC Key 37 and the hardware shortcut isn't listed for your model: check both the Quick Start and Operation Modes sections of the current manual before assuming your unit can't do it, Akai's own documentation doesn't fully agree with itself on that point.
